Hi. I need to paint a smoke damaged ceiling and walls. the worst of the soot has been washed off, but need to know what comes next as far as sealing and how many coats to use etc.
Thanks
clean the ceiling as best as you can with sugar soap and rinse off thouroughly. The best option to stop any staining coming back is to use a thinned down coat of a cheap oil based undercoat. Bit smelly but once dry can be overpainted with emulsion, this should stop the nicotine or stains from re appearing.
I've down this with damp patches, after repairs of course, and to stop black mould re-ocurring on bathroom ceilings. A bit of diluted bleach was also used to kill the mould.
