Hi folks
Just need reassurance that £4300 is a reasonable price to pay for supply and lay medium price range slabs over 60 square metres in South Wales.
Slabs are Marshalls Heritage in 3 sizes, max 60x60, job includes removal of existing slabs & spoil, construction of 1m wide steps with 3 risers and laying onto an existing garden steps base which will require a fair bit of slab cutting. Job seems a bit pricey by the Pavingexpert website standards, but ok in terms of other quotes.

Try working it out - I seem to remember that Marshalls slabs come in at about £12 per square metre, so that's £720.

From the sound of the job it's about three week's work by 2-3 people. Add to that the diamond blades, other materials plus the inevitable VAT. So £4300 doesn't seem too much.

Presumably you've got a quote with timescales so you're in a better position to judge. Also if you've had more than one quote you should have a feel for what gets charged in your area.

Thanks for that. You have just reminded me to check whether the price includes vat as it isnt specified on the quote!

Just a thought, but get say three quotes.

If you feel happiest with the mid range priced guy, then show him the other quote and see if he'll meet you half way and if he can he gets the job.

Other things to bear in mind are:

Examples of other work eg. portfolio
Guarantee
Payment terms? deposit for materials before commencing work? Total on completion? %50 Initial deposit? These are all areas that can cause anxiety (for both parties!)

A common practice is to use the excess materials from one job and carry over to the next - thus increasing the profit margin, ask each of the builders to breakdown the quotes showing material costs. ;) And look for wild discrepencies.

Hope that helps.

Hi

Marshalls Heritage is a top quality product - Its price will be about £28 plus vat in a builders merchants but your man will get 30% off that price (which he'll keep for himself no doubt)

If you want a good product at a cheaper price have a look at www.brett.co.uk - Canterbury range. probably half the price of heritage.
