I want to replace an entrance light with a PIR one that can also be switched on inside via the existing on/off switch.

If I take the existing switch wire and wire it into the S/L of the new PIR unit then at times that the switch is off inside but the PIR is activated outside then the switch wire going inside will become live.

Is this allowed? What is the best way to wire a PIR with a seperate switch activation.

Thanks

Yes that is allowed, as the supply should be isolated before working on circuits.

However, many PIR's have a built in override function, for example, if you switch the supply (existing switch) off and on briefly, will turn the light on permeantly or until dawn.

This doesn't require any wiring changes and the existing switch can be used to turn the light off all together (e.g summer).

So have a read of the instructions before rewiring.
