Are there any web sites anyone would recommend to help with planning consent, extensions / new builds etc.

I own a propety thats got a few peculiarities and want to find out where i stand with regards to development. Green belt, agricultural building etc etc. I want to get the low down before approaching the council planning dept so I know what I can and cant expect.

You can glean a lot of information by browsing the ODPM web site & downloading & studying the relevant guidance documents & regs. Also, your local planning staff can actually be quiet helpful with enquiries; contrary to what you may think, their role in life is not to restrict you, it’s usually the local planning committee that does that!

I’ve no connection with them at all by the way, was just pleasantly surprised at how helpful they were; & I got my PP!
