We ripped out our kitchen yesterday and have found a corner of the room is damp on the floor. In that corner is where the waste pipe from the upstairs bathroom enters the floor.

We suspect there is a problem under the concrete but we don't know what type of person we ring to fix this? Is it a plumber or someone from yell that deals with damage drain pipes etc?

I am presuming a plumber with a camera would be best? Just I have visions of ringing a plumber and them saying they cant diagnose the problem until the digg up the floor to get to the pipes. Where as someone with a camera would be able to have a look a first?

A plumber or drain co. with a camera will cost more  it`s not unusual for the join between the soil pipe and the drain to break - at the floor level , not under the concrete  also I`ve seen water in that place from waste connections above running down the vertical pipe - or even from the pipe slate on the roof . Can you post a picture here ;)

Before you call anyone check that the drain is free running by looking inside the next manhole while someone flushes the WC.

If the water is slow to drain and has a coluum of water standing in the pipe then that will cause a leak which would not be apparent when the drain is free flowing.

The usual charge for a CCTV inspection is about £300 and that will rarely identify a small leak.

Unfortunately diggine is often the only way to identify the cause. You dont say if its plastic or clay.

Call out a drainage company, at least you can have a DVD of your drain line, nothing like a dirty movie.
