we are in the middle of laying a patio using bradstone natural slate at moment, started out using a semi-dry mix (8-1 Dust/cement), but found quite a few of the slab which were laid on the previous day coming loose and not bonding at all with the laying mix so changed the mix to a wetter compound to try and get more suction with the bottom of the slab but to no improvment. so many coming loose now thinking of pulling up all laid slabs and starting over but dont know what to change.

any ideas would be appreciated.

use a solid mortar bed and tease a mortar joint up between the slabs as you go.

point the joint later on and brush of excess. touch up the pointing where the brush marks are, job done.

don't even think about 5 spotting and brushing some dry rubbish into the joints. this method will not last outdoors.

Excellect advice there. Follow it. I also always paint the underside with a cement/water slurry before laying, as suggested by natural stone manufacturers.
