Hi,

I have block and beam concrete floors that seem very cold. The house was built in the late 80's so not sure what insulation they would have used in the floor.

My question is what is the purpose of the ventilation bricks in a concrete block and beam floor. I can understand the requirement for ventilation in a wooden floor to the stop the joists from rotting but not with concrete beams. There obviously is a reason otherwise they wouldn't be there but I also think the cold floor is caused by the cold air circulating under the floor from outside.

I don't think its a good idea to block the air bricks so is there any other way of insulating the floor other than using thicker underlay and good quality carpet.
