I'm installing a security floodlight on an outside wall of the house.

On the inside of that wall, very near to the place I want to put the light, there's a double socket outlet, which looks like a mighty handy point to connect the electrical supply for the new light.

My plan is fit a new outlet alongside the sockets, which would be a switched fused connection unit.

My questions are:

1. Is this a sensible way to connect the new light?
2. Given that the light will be outside, does it need any RCD protection?
3. What cable would you use from the connection unit to the light, given that it will be exposed to the elements?

Many thanks

1. Yes.
2. No.
3. TRS (Tough Rubber Sheathed) flex will be fine. But, if you can, it makes sense to have no exposed cable at all, running it from inside to outside directly behind the light fitting.

Thanks dingbat - answers much appreciated, and I'll do my best to follow your advice on point 3 (second sentence).
