So we've stripped the wallpaper from the walls and done our absolute best to remove all traces of paste using scrapers/hot water/sugar soap and then lightly sanded the surface. We are now left with painted walls, no idea what type of paint it is or the age of it.

Before we apply the new Dulux vinyl silk emulsion, to prevent any reactions with any remaining paste residue or the existing paint could I undercoat with something? Specific brands/product names appreciated, can these be bought from the diy sheds?

Thanks

Chris

Any cheapo oil based undercoat will do. It can be thinned quite a bit with turps or white spirit, let it dry and give a gentle rub down, then coat with your chosen emulsion.

Thanks, but... been to b&q and they say they don't stock any oil based undercoats!

Typical of the ******* that work in there.. they stock quite a lot of it. I bought some only yesterday. Have a look at the back of the tin and if it says " wash brushes with white spirit of turps " then its oil based. They probably dont know what you mean when you say "oil based". They are pushing the water based stuff more now though.

Their own brand in the white tin with orange lettering is oil based and good for the job

Monkeys!

Is it true that oil based Ronseal Satincoat is beind discontinued? My mother went to get some on my instructions, only to be told that it was history. B&Q Again.
