I have bulit a garden retaining wall which has soil piled up 12 inch behind it and is showing signs of damp at the base in places. What can I do with this before I render it or will it be ok

You can't do anything with it. If you'd used engineering brick it would have been better.

As Joe says. If it`s not too much area and you really want to make sure render stays on ..........you could wire lath it. Fix the lathe at 12" centres and give three coats............overkill maybe but if it`s an important feature to you...
