Victorian semi. penetrating damp upstairs front bedroom.
Told to day the render was blown front and side hence damp.
84sq m and 16 edges quoted £5250 for removal of and new render NOT including scaffold and painted finish.
Does this seem like a lot and is it always necessary to replace render?
V. confused about who the best people are to diagnose the prob and then do works.

Any sizeable area of render that is blown from the brick/block should always be removed. It will never get any better, and over time will only get worse, once the rain, frost etc gets in behind it,,,,,and as you said, "hence the damp". The most important parts of any building are the roof and the walls/coatings. Again, ask around locally for several quotes. A reputable builder would probably be the best person to ask for advice, and take it from there.

could you not sort your own scaffold and hack off yourself then get a price, it might be cheaper and you may get more quotes.

I agree with what JB says. Anything you can do for yourself will save you money. The loose render would be no problem to remove, (although take it off carefully), if you can get a scaffold sorted out too, you're on your way.
