Hi all

I had a problem of efflorescence on plaster on my internal walls. Work has now been done on the exterior walls to repair spalled bricks / cracks / damaged pointing etc.

So the exterior should now be sound. The affected plaster has come off and left to dry out. The plan is to use a waterproof membrane, salt inhibitor and re-plaster the walls.

The interior motar in some rooms seems to be fairly cracked with multiple holes as in the attached photos. Where windows have been replaced in the past also seems to show some type of filler and wood where perhaps there should be brick.

Do you think any work is required to be done on the motar prior to plastering? The contractor believes it to be fine. Just wanted to get a second opinion if anyone has any thoughts on this. Cheers.

you can attach photos by copy and paste into your post

or by the "upload a file" button.

You could remove all timber pieces and re-build all incorrect brickwork.

Or, you could leave things as they are and metal mesh all timber
and then two coat render with 3:1 sand & lime.
no waterproof membrane needed.

any signs of wood rot then come back here.

check the bearing ends of the timber lintel
and check the exterior (silicone) sealing of the window frame.
