Roof rafer ends paint question

Hi.

Am I best just rubbing down these eith sand paper and removing loose paint and just painting with weather sheild gloss paint?

I was reading before someone saod use wood filler then paint?

The timber has dried and lost cellulose due to no protection from the weather. If the timber is flaky then consider a hardened first.

You will need some sort of filler or sealant else the paint won't cover and the weather will get in.
