My wife works at a school where an extension has been built. There are now 80 members of staff, but only 5 toilets (we're not talking about the kids here).

At break and lunch time, there's an obvious shortage of loos.

Does 5 toilets for 80 adults who all take break-time and lunch at the same time seem enough?

I would have thought planning would have required more.

There are building design guides but I dont expect they cater for the school break situation.

The obvious no cost solution is to stagger or extend the breaks!

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992

PART II

NUMBER OF SANITARY CONVENIENCES
4. In workplaces where females work, there shall be at least one suitable water closet for use by females only for every 25 females.
5. In workplaces where males work, there shall be at least one suitable water closet for use by males only for every 25 males.

Whether that includes a school I don't know but I suppose it is a workplace for teachers. :) So 1 bog for every 25 male/female teachers.

When I was a student I used to do TV repairs for a small shop with just one male staff.

The EHO said that they needed TWO toilets on male and one female.

That was stupid as no females worked there but the irish manager had a very good idea! He got two signs, a "Men" and a "Women" and placed both of them on the single toilet door!

The HSE guidance - Welfare at work. Guidance for employers on welfare provisions, 2007, still quotes The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 as I did.

Point me to the new regs. though, I don't have a problem being corrected.

The latest building regs part G also refer to the 1992 regulations

maybe but you quoted 1 suitable toilet for every 25 females and same for men.

female
1-5 1 toilet 1 basin
6-25 2 toilet 2 basin

male
1-5 1 toilet 1 urinals
16-30 2 toilet 1 urinals

so on.
