I tried to close a service valve on a pipe in the cellar and it sprang a leak, squirting out a fine jet from near the screw. I opened it again and it stopped so i closed it again and i now get a very slow drip. Will the valve actually be closed or might if a broke and stuck open?

Are service valves ball valves? should the screw only turn one way or can you turn them either way?

I don't want to start removing pipe to find the service valve isn't shut off!

Thanks

yes a ball valve can be turned both ways.
its useally cause they haven't been used for a while and the rubber 0 ring inside sticks then cause when you use they start to leak.
cheap n cheerful.

So I'll need to replace the service valve as well then.
That can come later when I connect the new pipe up.
