If you have an unvented system then turn off the mains water supply, open the hot tap until the pressure drops and then make the repair.

If your system is vented then look for a control valve on pipework between the cold water cistern and the hot water cylinder.

the only valve i can see is a red one that seems to be on a cold pipe would that be the one.
If it is do i close it and run the hot tap till the water stops.

cheers

If the valve is on the cold water supply to the base of the cylinder then that's the one you need.

Should be coming from your loft tank and entering the lowest point on the hot water cylinder - go easy as gate valves have a habit of jamming or not shutting off completely.
