Slate Hearth - protecting it

Hi,

I have a smooth slate hearth and I am wondering if it is wise to give it a bit of protection. I want to prevent marks from anything that might be spilled, but also since its a soft material I was hoping to also protect it from scratches.

Is there such a product? That will give it a non-shiny finish (matt or low sheen possibly OK).

I would use tile sealant and then a matt protector - Wickes do such a thing. Follow the instructions very carefully
