hi i would appreciate some advice please am looking at purchasing a small engined car because of saving on tax and insurance possibly a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Auto (my wife can only drive auto) my question is would it be ok to tow a camping trailer (trailer 5ft x 4ft) with an engine of that size comtably. the trailer is fairly light to begin with as im able to stand it up on its end for storage. any advise would be greatly appreciated

empty trailer would be fine but how much weight are you going to put in it?

If it's a camping trailer and, you're going to use it for going camping I wouldn't think you'd have a problem with it.

The recommended weight for a caravan would be 80% of the towing vehicles weight.
So I would suggest you shouldn't exceed that figure.
Hope this helps.

That car will be fine for that load. Look for a car in the £35/year tax bracket. Like my 1.4 diesel fiesta ;) That has plenty of oomph too.

thanks for all your help....it has been mentioned to me that it might be a good idea to fit a oil cooler to be on the safe side is that expensive?

I wouldn't go to that length, IMHO it's not needed and it probably would be quite dear.

it is an automatic, did you mean for the ATF?

I would love to see a festa tow a caravan  my left **** weights more than that  ;)
 It probably wouldn't tow a varacan, but a small trailer (what the OP wants) - yes!

thanks everyone for your help much appreciated.

1 question whats an ATF

automatic transmission fluid

(expensive red oil made from whales) it gets really really really hot in use.

it is an offence to tow a trailer without a licence to tow for all new drivers, grandfather rights apply for existing drivers.

you will need to check the weight of the vehicle being used to tow against the weight of the towed vehicle, the weight MUST NOT exceed a % of the towing vehicle by law.

i recon the weight againts towing will restrict you to one of those small 250kg trailers on a small vehicle otherwise risk of being overweight exist on combined weight or single axle weight.

think about it

you your wife and lugage = what in kg +
weight of trailer and its contents.

before buying it or dismissing it ask to see the owners handbook and manual which gives a clear indication as to the capacity of the car and what is capability is in towing with restriction listed.

youve not really indicated the weight of the trailer or whether it has additional storage or anything so as a rough guide....NOOOOOO

1.4 doesnt have the guts to tow when fully laden, road safety experts made provisions for law due to amount of small cars towing which proved to be unsafe with risk of jacknifing causing the horendous annual accidents on the M5 to the point that police in tourist season actively enforce the laws to deter others.

what will happen if you are stopped and over laden.
1 you will be prosecuted for it
2 you will be parked in a safe area until the weights are back within the limits.
this means you may be towed where needed at your cost or escorted to safe area by police.

your belongings
in order for you to reduce your vehicles and trailers weight you may have to discard belongings, if you are on a vosa weighbridge area you may have to pay for a company to collect your goods and store dispose off ect.
vosa nor police will allowed a continued journey whilst over weight.

so simply ask yourself is it worth the saving on fuel, only you know exactly what you are towing and its weight along with the laden weight of the towing vehicle ect.

rough guide it and check it against the handbook
