Spark between neutrals

You should turn off the main switch before removing or inserting a fuse, as it will arc and spark and burn the plug-in connections.

If the load is heavy or there is a fault it ccan be quite disturbing.

if the fuseholder or surround happens to be cracked, or break while you are tugging at it, you might get a nasty shock. Main fuses are especially dangerous in this way.

PS Is it OK to remove the fuse from the CU without switching off? Or is that classed as working live too?
I used to do this until someone mentioned that if the fusewire has been replaced in that fuse at some point but the end of the fusewire had been left sticking out behind the fuse, as you pull it out and touch the exposed part you will get a nasty shock which could be your last. :(

As already mentioned there could be arcing too.

Best isolation procedure is to test your multimeter on this circuit to make sure the multimeter is working, turn off main switch, remove relevant fuse, test circuit again with your multimeter to make sure circuit is dead, then proof test your multimeter on a known live circuit.

This might take an extra two minutes to an unsafe method...;)
