Stair tread refinishing

i haven't lifted the stair carpet in years but from memory there's the normal centre strip unpainted and maybe 4-6" of white paint on the edges. I plan to remove the carpet.

The hall is parquet and the newel posts and handrails are walnut /mahogany coloured.
White stringers and spindles.

The plan is to stain and seal the treads to match the newel and paint the risers white.
The original plan was to use oak cladding over the treads but I thought that I could save £5-700 by a diy approach

Having watched a YouTube video I would use a varnish scraper first, before sanding and staining.

I don't want to make a slippy finish so is there a safer treatment to use?

Any painted or varnished finish will be slippy

You could add very fine grit to the paint/varnish to alleviate this but not sure how good this will look

A Matt paint or varnish might be ok and provide just enough grip required
