The vent pipe is constantly flowing into the top of the expansion tank, a small ammount is dripping out of the overflow, but nowhere near as much as flowing in. Im on a mission to understand how it all works, but cant work out where the excess water going into the system is ending up? Sorry for the stupid question, any answers truly appreciated.

The water circulates round your system.

Of course its a fault!

looking at a few previous postings will give you an explanation.

ah ok its the same water going round and round. Thanks. I think i screwed the system by letting a few pints out of the radiator draincock, the boiler makes a nasty banging now...

Oh dear. Sounds like you have blockages - do a search on that.
The water level in the f & e tank should only be about 4 inches deep when the system's off/cold. It rises when it all warms but mustn't reach the overflow.
