could somone please help me, i have bought a new oak parquet floor and am about to make a start on it. my concrete subfloor wasn't in good shape so i self levelled the whole floor but there is still some small dips roughly 1/4 inch over a ten foot span, does the subfloor need to be perfectly flat. i wish to do it herringbone but is it easier with or without the two block border.

Small dips over the whole area or sloping a total 1/4 inch over 10 feet?
If the latter, than it's fine as it is; if the first, then you might have hollow sounds later if the adhesive doesn't bond completely.

As for a two block border with herringbone: if you are brave enough and have the correct tools you can install your pattern as far as needed (i.e. whole blocks as far as they go to the walls), wait a day, then cut the pattern with a circular saw set at correct depth to cut 'overlapping blocks. After that you can fill in the two block rows more easily without having to puzzle and filling in tiny triangles etc.
