I will be applying a waterproof shower kit (BAL) to newly skimmed walls. Bal states that plaster should be left 4 weeks before application. The walls have only been skimmed and to the naked eye have dried out to normal plaster colour in 48 hours.

Do I need to wait the whole 4 weeks before tanking the area as I would if the area was fully plastered

yes, wait the four weeks, the last thing you want if trap any moisture behind the tanking and then have the whole lot fall off further down the line.

I'm with John,,,,, follow the manufacturers instructions and you'll have no problems later on.
