the best laid plans and all that.

Can't believe how stupid they were. They'd done a good job of faking the death. Got the insurance pay out. Then a few days later, ta-da! 'No, I am alive! What do you mean, you want the insurance money back...?'

Why turn up at the Police station? Why not just appear at home one day with the 'I lost my memory routine' and bugger off back to Panama with wife, kids and insurance dosh? Or maybe because they'd spent it all, they were planning on selling the story?

Hmm.... :?:

they'd been under investigation

my guess is that they knew they were about to be caught and thought they might get off more lightly if they came forward with their unconvincing "loss of memory" tale.

I think that's the truth of it; the ‘lost my memory’ trick is straight out of a 1930’s B movie & wont cut any ice but he’s probably past caring. Even if he (they?) were home free, just like Regie Perrin, he (they?) was probably finding it’s not that easy to completely cut yourself off from the life & family you once had, even if you thought it was total carp at the time.

Look at Ronnie Biggs; with a life in exile & even the new family he had all those years, in the end, all he wanted was to get it all over & done with before he croaks!

What's the betting on 'wife meets hat wearing central american, and husband decides to drop them all in the sh*t'?...

She's on her way back escorted by some newspaper thats paying her for her story, so who says crime dosnt pay, maybe the monies paid to her should be taken as part payment for the life insurance theyve spent.

'Back from the dead' canoeist returned to UK 'after discovering wife's affair'

Canoeist John Darwin returned to Britain because his wife Anne had taken another lover and was going to end their marriage, it has been claimed.

Darwin was reportedly heartbroken after his wife said she was leaving him after 34 years. As a result he decided to try and start again in the UK.

Using the cover that he had lost his memory, 57-year-old Darwin was hoping to reclaim his old life and leave Anne with her Canadian boyfriend in Panama.

It is alleged he realised all the couple's assets were in her name and he would be left with nothing when she ended the relationship.

This new information offers one explanation why Darwin walked in a London police station 13 days ago claiming he had no memory of who he was.
