Having looked at a few of the digital and programmable thermostats, can I ask if anyone actually finds real benefits in practice using the programmable types?

Some have lots of programmable facilities but I wonder if they actually get used? I can see some merit in having summer/winter settings but does anyone actually use different temperatures during the day (other than, in effect, on and off)?

Just want to be sure whether it's worth paying the extra...?

I prefer to have a simple 'timer+room stat' setup.

The advantage of the programmable types is that you can leave your system to run automatically, including weekdays/weekends etc. I find that in reality I don't feel the same everyday, some days I want it warmer and some days cooler, this is much easier to do with a simple room stat. I did use to have a programmable one and I ended up either reprogramming it all the time, or switching to manual control.

I put my own heating in 25 years ago and the designers - Summerhill - recomended that the Teddington room stat went in the hall. And thats where it still is. also remember that sir furious of govan learnt not only his footballing trade, but his socialist ethos here in the hallowed grounds of ibrox stadium
where he returns regularly to watch this "quintessential british team"

Its a big advantage to a family home where the same things are done at the same times on different days but the same days from week to week.

Its convenient to set it back to say 12° when its not occupied if you have cats or pets or plants for example.
