Three course wall -- flemish bond needed?

The downpipe from the rainwater gutters on my 1970s house discharges into a standard open gulley with lift up cast iron gulley cover.
I want to "build up" the gulley using 2, or at the most 3, courses of bricks. Total bricks used = 9 max. This is mainly to prevent garden detritus getting in.
The original builders just stacked loose bricks round the gulley; this was revealed when I removed a pampas grass plant!

Question: For a 2 or 3 course layer of bricks do I need any foundations other than the already compacted sub-soil?

Question: For such a small "wall" can I just stack the bricks on top of each other rather than use a conventional "flemish" arrangement. Using a "flemish" stack I would probably have to break some half bricks. I'm a bricklaying newbie so I'm trying to keep it simple!

Thanks
Mike

You could get cast concrete surrounds @ one time..were quite common on your age of house...ask a builders merchant...that`s the easiest way to do it. :)

Thanks Nige. I'll investigate that option.

But I've got some spare bricks knocking about, so a cheaper option would be some surrounding brickwork.

a simpler solution might be to buy one of those black plastic gully shrouds from B&Q etc. This will be more effective than brickwork suround
