this question has been asked many times before (and once by me!) so I thought I'd post back my findings.
People have suggested that a tonne of topsoil is around £50 but looking around I was finding it at ~£90 per tonne (Edinburgh). Jewsons, Wickes, etc, were laughable at, err, over the ton per tonne.
I had a couple of quotes at over a grand for 9T!
I had been googling "topsoil" and was not having much luck and then decided to look for turf as that was phase II of the project. Whaddyaknow... turf suppliers all do the soil at less than £50.
Finally got a good deal from a local supplier (dunno if advertising is allowed - if it is, I'll edit this and put their name up) at £315 for 9 tonnes (bagged), delivered 25 miles.
So if anyone else is looking, check out local turf suppliers and persevere!
