how can I tighten a newel post?The railing attaches at two places,One side is straight,the other is going down the steps.

You will find that if you can lift 1 or 2 of the floorboards next to the post that it will be fixed to your floor joists.Pre-drill and then screw in 2 or 3 coach screws of sufficient length to ensure a good grip without coming out of the rear of the joist.

thanks. If I remove the cap, is there anyway to tighten it from above? There is a hardwood floor around the post.
