Goodday. When measuring for Upvc windows a 5mm gap is allowed all round for expansion. In all the installation videos on the web packing pieces are inserted between wall and frame at the fixing points, the fixers tightened, and the packers left insitu. Thus no expansion gap !! Could any pros out there explain what is best practise as I'm confused.Thanks.

Thanks for the reply,Crys.Your reference underlines my point. On page 15 they give expansion allowances, then on page 27 they jam in packers in the expansion gaps.Still confused.

Normally packing is fitted by the fixing screws to prevent the screws from being overtightened and distorting the frames.
The expansion and contraction will mainly happen at the corners where long lengths meet. Expansion is roughly 1.6mm per linear meter for most materials.
Or you can just use concrete screws http://www.seac.co.uk/concrete_masonry_screws as they are self packing, Just check the frame is straight after you have tightened them and jobs done.
