Using silicone to fix split face tiles

Hi

Looking to fit approx 6 square metres of split face to a kitchen wall.

Tile shop has said to use silicone or no nails to stick onto the wall. The wall to be tiled is a painted plasteboard wall and is in good condition.

Guessing this isn't the ideal method but has anyone else used this method?
