Is there any reason why I shouldn't use Dulux Brilliant White undercoat (solvet based) to give a matt finish on wood? (i.e. not use any kind of top coat)
I could buy a 750ml tin of eggshell as a top coat but it's for a small item so hardly worth the cost. I should add that it's for interior use.

I actually want a pale grey finish rather than white so I was thinking of adding a small amount of black. Would Alkyd artist paint work for this?

Undercoat is not a finish, it will get dirty quickly, it may even appear streaky.

Have you considered satin or eggshell?

There are loads of matt Wood finish paints. That good home durable matt from B&Q will go over woodwork.. Say walls ceiling and wood / furniture.
Undercoat will be chalky kind of and not last
