Very high chance that the flow switch on the left hand side of boiler has a fault . It has a wax capsule in it that makes the insides of the valve move from heating to hot water .
Old boiler now, so parts may not be avialable capsule was about 20 quid and whole valve about 150
Remote possibility that it is the calorifier but these where bullet proof

The wax element is no longer listed as a part on its own. ( I have just one left now! )

The whole diverter valve is still listed at about £165.

hi thanks for your replys i have just noticed that when i swith the heating or the hot tap on when the boiler fires up the flames arent going very high could they be stuck on low flame or something?

It could be a boiler fault causing only low flame.

It could also be a restricted gas supply or meter regulator fault.

How is the flame size on the gas cooker when you turn the boiler on?

Several possibilities but all would need a CORGI.

A competent CORGI then!

But make sure he is comfortable with the Sine 18 !

I have this feeling that you are just going to be told the price of a new boiler!

why not call vaillant themselves? fixed price £215
