Vauxhall Astra ('94) Rev Counter stuck

I have a problem with the rev counter on my astra. The darned thing is stuck on 2000 revs and doesn't move even when the engine's off. Had a look in the haynes but can't find any reference to the Astra even having a rev counter.
Anyone have any ideas as to the cause/remedy of this problem. All comments welcome even if they're just guesswork......I'm at a loss.

New Tachometer (rev counter) I'm Afraid, unless you can free it up.

You need to strip the instrument cluster out of the dash and dismantle and remove the tachometer. New they are about £50 if I remember rightly as I did my Dad's some years ago on his 94 Astra.

You might be able to find one much cheaper at your local scrapper
