I have a friend who recently bought a house with a downstairs toilet that has no external walls - it is basically off the hallway and on the shared wall of a semi-detached house. At the moment there is no ventilation and we were trying to figure out the best way to achieve this. Any ducting would have to be at least 6-8 metres and would not be easy to install. Is there such a thing as an "extractor" fan that doesn't need a vent, e.g. with washable filters like in some kitchens? Any other suggestions?

no, you need a duct

You might be able to put it in a disused chimney (with a condensation trap)

you might be able to run it between joists

you might be able to run it under the floor

you might be able to run it behind a fitted wardrobe or in a cupboard upstairs

Thanks JohnD. The toilet is actually downstairs, and in one direction (towards front of house) is the front door, in the other direction (towards back) is a fitted kitchen. Furthermore, the whole downstairs has new wooden floor fitted so getting underneath would be inconvenient.

Not sure what the best option is then because either the ducting would have to go through the hall or living room, in which case there would be nothing to obscure it behind, or through the kitchen which would probably be a fair amount of work. What do you think? Also, is there a maximum length of ducting like there is with a vented dryer?

Hi,

Did you find a solution to this?

I'm looking to buy a Victorian semi-detached house and would like to know if it will possible (without ridiculous cost implications) to put a toilet under the stairs away from an external wall. The stairs are against the party wall and the house has just been refurbished throughout so it wouldn't be the best move to have to dig up the carpets / floors to get to an external wall for the waste pipes but if that's the only solution, I wonder what kind of cost there may be?

Anyone able to help? Greatly appreciated.

Thanks
