Wall built of glass blocks

I had a shower installed a few years ago using glass blocks on one side. Now the bottom three courses have got cracks in them, and shards of glass are coming off. Clearly I need to get it replaced, but I want to understand why this happened so I don't get the same problem again. All the guys I've had round have different views, from "it's movement" to "it's the hot water penetrating" to "it should be built with silicone spacers". Does anyone have any ideas?
