hello i would just like to know what i would need to do if this happened to me. Say i have patterned wallpaper and im doin around a window i have put the top length on and the bottom length on (above and below the window) then i plum line them again to make sure they are in line. Now say they wasnt say it was 2 inches out from the top to bottom. I have read in books that i need to take away 2 inched away from the paper so i plum the next line up 2 inched shorter than the full width of the paper so they meet again (hope you understand what i mean). All im finding hard is i can understand this is plain paper but the pattern would be well out if it was patterned paper so what would i need to do?

If its a bay window, there can be a difference from the top to the bottom.
I did mine by papering along the top, then put the full drop in at the other end, then worked back along the bottom, from the piece of paper just hung, & the discrepancy was then behind the radiator. So if you have a rad its easy.

I am only a diyer, the specialist must all be at the pub or is f/ball on.

i know what you mean if the first paper is dead straight then it should never go out of line but in my decorating book it said it can happen dont ask me how but i would just like to know if it did happen what would i need to do.


DIYISFUN that is what i was thinking would be the best idea but would like to see what everyone else has to say.

Imagine that you have striped wallpaper. Those stripes must always stay upright - now matter what the room does they always stay upright and are butted next to each other.

If its a large flower type pattern that wont tolerate being out of tru, then I normally mark window out to get an even drop at each end. Then hang first long drop, cut out the paper matching bits for all the remaining top/botttoms, paste all these bits in sequence , i.e top/ bottom/top bottom. They will all soak at the same time soo. Hang top then under window, plumb* then top/under window/plumbob. Then on last bits hang the end 'long drop' strait away (after soaking ) The paper whilst wet can be slightly moved to give a perfect butt/ match.
Basicly dont hang first peice then start again next day. do it all at the same time befor it dries out.with the paper soaked for the same length of time, Keeping it level on each peice will ensure the match is maintained, but watch out for window reveals which are not always level this can make the pattern run out. and dont stretch the paper by pressing tooo hard.

thank you for your help. what would i need to do if it was a window reveal if that made it go out of line? can the window reveal make the pattern go out alot or would it only be a couple of mm? many thanks

Make sure you keep to your lines and not the window reveals/cill. On old houses with susidence issues , keeping to a plumbline will maks an uneven window show up wosre, you have to decide whats best accordingly.
