Water Softener Answers Required

Once I have fitted a Water Softener will it start to break down the limescale that has been building up in my pipes, Hot water tank and appliances over the years or will that always be there?

How will it get into my central heating system?
will I have to drain the old water from the system so it will fill up with the new soft water?

Any help much appreciated.

Do you mean a pukka ion-exchange salt-fed softener, or an electronic scale reducer, or some other product under the name water softener?
