Which render system do I install?

Hi

We are starting to renovate our house that we bought a few years ago. It is a mid-terraced house, built approx 1890. Main walls are of solid construction in brick rendered externally with pebble dash.

The pebble dash is in bad condition and we want to replace it with another render system.

Could anyone recommend the best system, does it need to be breathable?

With that date the house would have been originally built using lime mortar which many people still regard as superior to modern day sand and cement. It does take a bit longer to set but has a tendency to "self repair". Knowing this I had my last house (built 1922) which needed some brick work repaired done by a brickie who knew about lime mortar. Lime mortar also makes an excellent render and there are historic properties in this country where the lime mortar render is hundreds of years old. Best example I know is the colusseum in Rome, done with lime mortar and much of it still standing. I understand your need, pebble dash should never have been done in the first place IMO.
