Why does water vortex down the plug hole?

Fill a sink with cold water, agitate it to remove the clockwise motion imparted to it, by the tap being on the right hand side.

Leave for about 1 hour, so the water becomes still, gently lift the plug.
The water will drain straight down with no clockwise or anti clockwise movement.

Myth.

As said, the sink is filled from the left and then from the right which alters the way it drains.
If you spin the water in a bath in the opposite direction to the way it is naturally going, the whole bath will empty in that direction. If it was due to gravity the vortex would correct itself, but it doesn't.
