WHY'S MY PLASTERING CRACKING?????

Hi , I am a time served Joiner and i have just started to renovate my home. I have come across a problem i have never dealt with before and wondered if anyone may be able to help.

As usual in an old property after stripping off the wallpaper some of the skimming has come off and needs patching. I have used multi-finish on the patching up but for some reason as it is drying it is just cracking and falling off! I presumed i had bought a bad bag of plaster so i went and bought another bag from a different supplier. The same happened again!

Now i am starting to get a complex as i have just put a ceiling and short wall up above my staircase and a similar thing has happened. It has tiny cracks all over similar in effect to a car windscreen cracking but it has thankfully stuck to the plasterboard at least lol! My father has looked at it and he has also been in the trade for over 25 years and even he hasn't a clue!

Can anyone please give any advice?

The surface is sucking out the water from the plaster. Coat all surfaces with PVA before plastering and you'll have no bother.

sounds to me like you have too much suction on the background. PVA the area with a 3:1 mix, let it dry, then another coat 2:1 and skim while tacky.

That should definitely work, plastering without applying pva to the wall will normally do this and make your plaster go off quicker too meaning the jobs a lot harder.

Apply your bond like the guys say but you should also be aware that if you are putting on a thick coat, you should consider using a scratch coat ( bond )
