Your boiler is very old!

Pumps usually fail due to dirt in the system.

The diverter fails or jams after a number od years and due to dirt..

High temperatures usually indicate a failure of the control system.

With you "changing," the bits yourself I guess you regularly serviced the boiler as per MI's  every year? I am surprised it has lasted this long without proper maintenance... Those parts are quite a few pennies, I wouls recommend you consider a new boiler. New money into an old boiler isn't cost effective if it is over 10 yrs old.... But, on a plus point, iy has had a good innings
