Putting in ducting and vent for cooker hood

Hi All,

I am in the process of fitting a cooker hood. I am hiring a 4" core drill for the day early next week, but wanted a little advice regarding finishing off the hole.

I plan to drill out the hole and put in a plastic sleeve which will also act as the connection between the outside vent and duct pipe inside. Is it ok to simply secure the sleeve into the hole and seal the edges on the outside with brown silicone/mastik and then cover it with the outside vent? i plan to do pretty much the same on the inside, but with white silicone.

I have not really found much info online regarding the through wall connections and was worried about drafts and water getting in. Is what i plan to do acceptable?

Check the recommended ducting size! Most cooker hoods require a 125mm vent ducting now and not the cheap white plastic tumble dryer vent pipe either! Should be the foil ducting. Get a vent cover with shutters so they only open when the hood is on. Make sure you get the ear plugs!

this one was an end of line/ old stock Hotpoint one from Comet and the booklet says 100mm.

Is the method for going through the wall ok?

Sounds ok.

What you would normally do is fix the hose to the back of the gravity flap cover and tape it with duct tape then drill and fix the gravity flap cover to the wall. The slack on the hose simply concertinas back into the void.

Be careful how you drill because there is little room for error meaning the drill bit can easily wander into the the core hole.
