I have a flap vent on the outside of our house (the outlet for an extractor fan over our hob) that has come loose.

It looks like it was previously attached/sealed round the edges with a thick sealant.

Will (external) window and door frame sealant do to re-attach/seal it to the brickwork or should I use something else?

On a side note the back of the flap sticks out approx 50mm (rectangular) and fits directly into a rectangular vent that I assume originates from the extractor. Can you still get vents like this? I had a look at B&Q, and they only had vents that were more or less flat with a circular & rectangular template at the back that seemed like they need to be attached to flexible hosting???

Finally got the replacement through, and there are holes in the corners.

Do people recommend screwing these (vents) to the wall before sealing them to it?

We try and cut our vent holes so that the masonry isn't all shot to bu99ery, so that further down the line we are able to use mechanical fixings.

The problem is that the vent flap fixing points are rather close to the edge.

I usually get my cordless hammer drill out for these and use a 6mm masonry drill as the big bosch fella is too aggressive. You have to take care as to not split the brick or mortar joint when drilling.

We also sleeve our holes with a piece of 110mm soil pipe then silicon this into place, thus locking up the surrounding masonry.
