Hiya,

I'm very new to DIY (just bought our first house) and the first room myself and my girlfriend are trying to redecorate has become a lot more complicated than we first thought :) I'm hoping someone on here can help point us in the right direction.

The house is a Victorian property, with painted-on wall-paper throughout. In the bedroom we have stripped the wallpaper from the walls, and the plaster seems to be in good condition, and we've polly-filla'd any obvious dents. However there are some untidy areas around the edges that we just don't know what to do with. Namely:

Large-ish holes where the walls meet the ceiling

Gaps where wall meets ceiling

Holes in ceiling and deteriorating plaster around windows

Gaps between wall and fireplace

Gaps between skirting board and walls

Crumbling plaster and rough edges where plaster meets wood (at fireplace and windows)

Any advice, general or specific, would be much appreciated. The pictures and examples I've included are not all of the issues in the room, it's mostly like this - should we be looking into getting a professional to sort these areas out? We just want to get the best finish we can.

Many Thanks,
Joe

Hi just saw your post, have you got your walls sorted yet? if not how are you planning on decorating them once filled ie paint, wall paper, or painted lining paper?

Get a pro in buddy, look, listen and ask a few questions and you might be able to tackle the next little job that comes up. The pictures describe far more than basic prep and a lick of paint

Get a bag of pollyfiller/tetrion type stuff and give it a whirl. You haven't got anything to lose apart from a few quid.

I think that you may be able to get it ok-ish if not perfect.
