replacing white paint from stairs - varnish or stain

hi any tips as to what to go for after removing white paint. no idea what the texture of the wood is underneath the stair! ta

You'll never get it all off. Better sanding and repainting.

Under what stair? Do you mean pannelling on a wall under a bannister, or the treads on the staircase itself, what?

It's only worth stripping paint off wood if you know that there's something beautiful underneath.
