Basically, 6mm or 10mm? We don't actually have an electric hob right now (just an electric oven) but when wiring in a new circuit I want to be future proof.

Go for two circuits then one for cooker and one for hob!
It would be hard to be future proof, ovens and hobs are getting more powerful for the domestic sector and there will also be advancements in cable selection!
What you need to consider is what you may want in the future and either leave it until then if you are undecided or make provisions now, going a little over the top with your selection.
A 15kW cooker will be quite safe on 32A breaker and 4.00m2 twin and earth (providing no deratings) This would be calculating for diversity, without diversity the same appliance would need 16mm2 T&E!

No cable data to hand - OOI, what rating of cooker could be supported by 25mm² T/E after diversity?

Fair point. Reckon then that 10mm is a fair compromise and should be relatively future proof.

Might have trouble finding some 25mm² 6242Y though....
