We are a semi detached house (1950s) and the conncecting wall is in our 2 year old daughters room. We are having a problem with cigarette smoke coming into their room from the neighbours. this is especially noticable at night. We have plastered the walls, sealed a vent that went to an outside wall, and put plastic under the carpet in case it might be coming through our flooring (though this was a rush job). We've had two surveryors come to check the outside wall, the windows and the loft. Nothing has been found to be wrong.
Our neighbours put in a loft extension about the same time the girls moved into their room so we don't know if the problem existed before they were born. Our neighbour has sealed any cracks he could find in the loft just incase the wall between our houses was breeched.
Our last resort, before looking to move, is to put linoleum tiles under the carpet and put silicone around the edges of the skirting boards to try and seal the room just in case the smoke is coming through the floorboards. Any ideas if this might work? Any negatives of doing this? Is there something better to use than linoleum to 'seal' the floor?
