My boiler isn't running my heating tonight.
It's -3 here at the moment

The same thing happened last year when really cold!

Water is Luke warm and boiler keeps cutting out and going into lock out.
I reset it and the tiger loop thing starts to fill, boiler starts then stops and tiger loop then drains to nothing.
Any ideas????
Half a tank of oil so that's fine,
Pressure ok - I topped this up.

Boiler is two years old grant vortex outside combi oil.
Serviced each year.
Had a grant installed previously cost me a small fortune!
Livid second boiler is also now not working on cold days!!!
When will I ever learn?

Any ideas on what I need to do?
Any good plumbers in Forest of Dean I could use???

1 This doesn't sound like a boiler fault, check filters, oil line etc.

2 Grant Vortex are one of the best boilers on the market and are very reliable.

3 Don't call a plumber call a Heating/Oil Boiler Engineer.

How do I check the oil line???

I'm not technical just a householder!
So I need something simple to follow

Thanks for responding so quickly

I meant check any joint for soundness ie, no leaks, are tight etc visible checks to the whole oil line to check its all ok (I had one the other day where the mortar from the house had eaten a hole in the side) and most importantly clean and/ or replace filter(s). Sounds like a partially blocked oil line/ filter. Could also be the fuel pump at fault but eliminate the basics first. If in doubt call an oil engineer.

So presumably it was serviced a few months ago during the summer?

Have you not called the engineer who did the service first?

Who repaired it last year?

Tony

Many thanks for your responses. I've just been out... It's very cold!

I can't see any visible leaks on the oil line....although the line is underground from tank to tiger loop thing.

I have called my installer / service guy whos excellent I can't fault him ... I just can't get an answer which is very unusual for him so am worried he's away.

The red light is on the boiler.
How many times can I press this ??
I don't want to damage it.... Will I damage it?

When I press it differing amounts of oil arrive in the tiger loop...
Will pressing it help or is this naive and wishful thinking.

It is common in this cold weather for any water that may have entered the oil supply to sit in the oil pipe at the lowest point.

When the temperature drops it frezes and causes a blockage. Get your oil line pumped out to remove any water...

Leaky Dave - thanks

I did have the heating on today
Would it have still frozen in this short amount of time?

I see you are based in glosc is the Forest of Dean your area?

It has not risen above freezing here all day. I am in Forest Yes.

Grant are good boilers and ones I would recommend to anyone who asked me for my opinion.

Guys you were right!
The oil line was completely frozen!..hence no oil getting to the boiler.

I'm ff out to by external lagging

Any other advice anyone has to prevent ths in future???

My fabulous gas guy came first thing and sorted it ... He's a real star!
He had the day off yesterday (well earned) hence why iciuldnt get through on the hone.

If you eliminate the water from the oil line, you will not need lagging. find out where the water is getting in your tank and eliminate that. Then remove as much of the water from your tank as you can. Do this with a suction pump and a hose to the bottom of the tank. When it runs clear you should be ok, but check with water finding paste.
