My PowerMax 155 boiler whistles for 2 – 5 mins every time the HW or CH program runs from cold. The whistling only occurs just before the boiler internal tank seems to reach its maximum operating temperature. The whistling then stops just before the burner turns itself off. Any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks in advance

Heatstore operates at quite high temperature, so kettling is very likely. If yours is an 'open top' version (ie. with an F&E tank) are you SURE that there are no leaks in the system which could be allowing the system to 'top-up' all the time. If this has happened for a while, your heatstore will be lime-scaled! Also, is yours the version with electronic limescale gadgetry? or a Siliphos catridge? Either way, make SURE these are working, otherwise the hot-water coil will scale up big-time!

Thanks for the replies.

I've only just moved into the house so I aren't sure if there have been any past leaks in the system and I haven't noticed any leaks myself. I've assummed the system is open top, it has a header tank, and I have no idea regarding the limescale gadgetry fitted (if any).

The noise to me sounds more like a mechanical noise, maybe a fan or motor bearing. I can turn the off the boiler electrical power when it is whistling and the noise stops instantly, if it was kettling I would expect the noise persist for a short while?

Get yourself a tin od spray silicone and get some into the fan its not a solution but it will work sort term and you may get an answer, with the pump when its making the noise turn the pump speed up and down and see what happens?? ive been to breakdowns with these kind of noises and the pump has neen turned to low this slows down the water round the system and can couse the boiler to over heat and make noises.

Give it a try,

Pete

it sounds like your gas valve needs adjusting. if you can hear the whistling outside then its definatly the gas valve. its easy to fix. im a powermax specialist it you want to know more email me

the powermax 155 and 155x do not suffer from kettling unlike the 135 and 185

I have the same problem with my Powermax 155.
It emits a very high pitched whistle when it's turned on.
Sometimes turning it off and on again stops it, but not always.
I opened up the top, and could only see one moving part, which looks like the fan. I sprayed WD-40 in there, but it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

A Jeffries - any chance I could email you about this? I can't get your email address on the board, so if you can get mine, could you email me?

Thanks
Nick

I have a powermax boiler 155 formally made by IMI Waterheating, its about 5 years old and until recently it was whistling, every time the heating came on it started about 2 minutes after it fired up.
Over the past 6 months I tried everything de-sludging it replacing pressure relief valves but all to no avail, it finally became too much and I was sick of getting up just because the heating came on.

I finally relented and phoned Baxi (heat team)
http://www.baxi.co.uk/aftersales/contact/engineerVisit.html
Telephone: 08706 096 096.
and asked for an engineer, previous tradesmen didn't want to know!
The cost was .....get this .......£235.............

Well he turned up said I know what that is and fixed in about 2 minutes it was the air/gas mixture he turned a tuning screw and bingo fixed no more whistling, he also changed the whole valve unit just to be sure ......at least I got something for my £235 !!!!

So get your local heating engineer to find this screw and give it a turn

Good Luck hope this helps

I also have a intermittantly whistling powermax 155 (usually at 6am when the burner comes on, then randomly throughout the day).

Where is this air/gas mixture screw?
Which direction should it be turned, and how much?

I live on a estate built 5 years ago, all with this boiler, and you can hear all the boilers around whistling in tune with each other. It's quite sad!! From the above quote, anybody who knows how to fix this, could earn a small fortune visiting my estate! :)

Cheers
Mark.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES START TURNING THIS SCREW
this screw is on the gas valve and should only be adjusted by a corgi registered engineer with the correct tools i.e a digital manometer and gas flue tester as incorrect adjustment could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning this is most certainly NOT A DIY job
