inadequate ventilation in loft

having been in my house two months I have discovered condensation on the north side of the pitched roof which is soaking into the joists.... I have removed the insulation which was blocking the gaps to the soffits, although I cannot see any obvious vents in the soffit board area. I hope this will help. Do i need to do anything else?

Your soffit boards should not be flush with the wall.
Do you mean they are?
The vent is the gap between the wall and the soffit board.
The new-type plastic vents you see are just to stop the birds and bees being naughty in your loft.
You've done the right thing by removing the insulation that was blocking the airflow.
New builds have a currogated plastic sheet in that area over the insulation to ensure a gap.
North facing is the coldest direction, so without ventilation it's not surprising you've got condensation at this time of year.
Given time, your loft should dry out.
